Charts
Charts in Lakehousecat are AI-generated visualizations produced during chat conversations. When you ask a data question that results in a visual answer, the system automatically creates a chart and links it to your conversation. These charts are then accessible in the Analytics section of the workspace, where you can manage, share, and approve them.
Prerequisites
To generate charts, ensure the following is in place:
- A Custom Model linked to one or more data sources with a completed semantic extraction. See Models and Data Sources.
How Charts Are Generated
Charts are created automatically during a chat conversation when the AI determines that a visual response is appropriate for your query. You do not manually create charts — they are the output of a natural language interaction with your data.
Example:
"Show me monthly revenue for the last 12 months as a bar chart."
After the AI processes this query against the linked data source, a chart appears in the chat response. The chart is simultaneously saved in the Analytics > Charts section.
Clarification Step
Before generating a chart, the system evaluates whether your request is specific enough to produce an accurate result. If your prompt is ambiguous — for example, it is unclear which metric, time range, or grouping you want — the AI asks a single clarifying question before proceeding.
Example:
You: "Show me the top products." AI: "Which metric should I use to rank the products — total revenue, units sold, or profit margin? And do you want the top 10 or a different number?" You: "Total revenue, top 10." AI: [generates chart]
Clear and specific requests proceed directly to chart generation without any clarification step. Adding details such as the metric, timeframe, grouping, and chart type to your initial prompt avoids the clarification round and produces faster results.
Accessing Charts
- Navigate to Workspace → Analytics.
- Click the Charts tab.
The Charts page displays all charts associated with your account, organized in three sections:
| Section | Description |
|---|---|
| My Charts | Charts generated in your own chat conversations |
| Shared by Me | Charts you have shared with other users or groups |
| Shared with Me | Charts that others have shared with you |
Chart List Features
Views
Toggle between two display modes:
- List View — Compact row-based layout showing chart name, status, and actions
- Cards View — Visual grid layout with chart thumbnails
Search
Use the search bar to filter charts by name.
Filter by Tag
Each chart can be assigned a color tag for quick categorization. Click the colored dots in the search bar to filter charts by their assigned tag color.
Filter by Custom Model
A Custom Model filter dropdown lets you narrow the chart list to charts generated by a specific model.
Chart Actions
Hover over a chart entry to access the action menu (⋯) or use the available buttons:
| Action | Description |
|---|---|
| View (expand icon) | Opens the chart in a full detail view |
| Edit (pencil icon) | Opens the chart editor to adjust visualization settings |
| Clone | Creates a copy of the chart |
| Share | Opens the sharing dialog |
| Approve | Marks the chart as a trusted, verified visualization |
| Delete | Permanently removes the chart |
Editing a Chart
AI-generated charts can be further customized after creation. Click the Edit (pencil) icon on any chart to open the chart editor in a new browser tab.
In the editor you can adjust:
- Chart type — switch between bar, line, pie, scatter, map, and other visualization types
- Color mapping — assign specific colors to individual data series or categories
- Metrics and dimensions — change what is measured and how data is grouped
- Axis labels, legends, and number formatting — control how values are displayed
- Filters — restrict the data shown in the chart
Changes you save in the editor are reflected immediately in your chart — in the Analytics workspace and in any dashboards the chart is part of.
Only the chart owner can edit a chart. If a chart was shared with you, you can view it but not edit it. Use Clone to create your own copy that you can then edit.
Approving Charts
The Approve action marks a chart as verified and trusted. This is useful in team environments where charts are reviewed before being shared with broader audiences. Approved charts are visually distinguished in the list.
Sharing Charts
To share a chart:
- In the chart list, click the More (⋯) menu on the desired chart.
- Select Share.
- In the sharing dialog, select the users or groups you want to share the chart with.
- Confirm to apply.
Shared charts appear in the Shared by Me section for the owner and in the Shared with Me section for recipients.
To stop sharing a chart:
- Go to the Shared by Me section.
- Click More (⋯) on the shared chart.
- Select Unshare (or use the revoke option in the sharing dialog).
Chart Detail View and Fullscreen
Click the expand icon on any chart to open the full detail view. This view includes:
- The full chart visualization
- Metadata (creation date, linked model, data source)
- The underlying SQL query that generated the chart
- Options to approve, share, or clone directly from this view
If the chart was generated in a conversation with a Custom Model, the General tab shows a Go to session link back to that conversation, so you can review the context in which it was created. The link is only available to the chart's owner, and only for charts generated in a session — for charts you don't own, or that were created outside a session, this field shows as not available.
From the detail view, click the fullscreen icon to expand the chart to full screen. Press Escape or click the fullscreen icon again to exit.
Audit Log
Every change to a chart — creation, edits, approvals, and sharing — is recorded in the audit log. Administrators can review the full change history of any chart in the Audit Log tab of the chart editor.
Best Practices
- Use specific queries: The more specific your question, the more accurate and useful the generated chart. Include timeframes, groupings, and the preferred chart type in your query.
- Approve charts before sharing: Use the Approve action to mark charts as verified before sharing them with your team.
- Tag your charts: Assign color tags to organize charts by topic, project, or status.
