Model Map

The Model Map tab provides a visual overview of the data relationships in a Custom Model's semantic layer. It shows how the connected data sources, entities, and metrics relate to each other — giving Builders and Administrators a clear picture of the model's structure.

Availability

The Model Map is generated automatically when the semantic model is created (see Operations). It is not available until at least one semantic model build has completed.

If no semantic model has been built yet, the tab shows an empty state with a notice that the Model Map will appear after the first build.

What the Model Map Shows

The map is an interactive graph visualization. It displays:

  • Data sources connected to the model
  • Entity relationships — how dimension tables relate to fact tables
  • Join paths used by the semantic layer to combine data

The visualization reflects the model's current semantic state. If you update or rebuild the semantic model, the map updates accordingly.

  • Zoom in / out — use the zoom controls to focus on specific parts of the graph
  • Pan — click and drag to move around the map
  • Refresh — reload the current map state without leaving the tab

Best Practices

  • Review the Model Map after creating a semantic model to verify that all expected relationships are present.
  • Use the map to identify missing join paths before users start generating charts.
  • If the map looks unexpectedly sparse or disconnected, check the connected data sources and trigger a semantic model update from the Operations tab.

See Operations for information on creating, updating, and rebuilding the semantic model.
